In this Nike Metcon Repper DSX review, I’ll take a look at this model shoe before some info on the significance of wearing good training shoes, and detail what you need to know about this sport-specific footwear.
I believe the Nike Metcon Repper DSX offers excellent value for money. The athletic shoe has been around since early 2017 and it’s design was based on the premium Nike Flyknit trainer but at a lower price.
This model as with other models of Nike Metcon boasts superior stability via the design of the sole. The composition of the upper provides flexibility, and the outer sole ensures a good grip. It’s lightweight with soft cushioning, which makes it comfortable to wear for long periods.

Who is the Nike Metcon Repper DSX For?
For me, it’s not a training shoe that I would choose solely for running. I would suggest this is an athletic shoe designed primarily for those participating in dynamic workouts such as jumping, sprinting, basketball and general gym work. It also accommodates cross-training exercises, which combine aerobics (cardio exercises) with strength training or bodyweight training.
It Might Not Suit Everyone
This trainer may not be ideal for individuals keen on long-distance running/marathon training or walking exercises. Running shoes are designed to provide necessary ankle support and specific mechanics in the heel and midsole.

Walking requires footwear with a stiff heel since the activity is more heel-bearing. I feel the Nike Metcon Repper DSX falls a bit short in that area.
Pros:

Features and Benefits
Upper
The upper consists of knitted mesh and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). This is a type of plastic with elasticity, allowing for flexibility. Mesh is generally made of polyester or nylon and gets perforated with a laser. These tiny holes allow for better air circulation in the shoe, providing breathability and keeping your feet dry during workouts.
The Flywire lacing ensures a secure fit, and the spacious design of the toe box prevents your toes from enduring too much pressure during activity.
Overall, the upper is flexible yet sturdy. Both of which are key elements for cardio and resistance training footwear.
Midsole
The midsole is made of phylon material, which is composed of compressed foam pellets. This offers extra cushioning and a responsive ride without weighing down the shoe.
The DSX version of the Nike Metcon is the only model that features an additional 0.1 inches of cushioning in the rear of the midsole. The material used is also softer than previous models, offering greater comfort.
Outer Sole
The outer sole is made of rubber and has a good grip. The forefoot features grooves, which amplifies the flexibility of the shoe. This makes it versatile for a number of exercises, from sprinting to weightlifting.
For me, it doesn’t have the most exceptional traction, which narrows the types of terrain it can safely be used on. It works well with indoor surfaces, but not my choice for outdoor training.
Support
The DSX provides a reasonable amount of support in the arch of the midsole. Arch support evens out foot pressure, hence protecting your feet from undue stress.
Flywire cables are inserted in the laces, which locks down the foot. The soft and responsive cushioning ensures that the user has a comfortable and stable exercise experience.
Durability
In my opinion, this shoe can handle regular, vigorous workouts for several months before the signs of wear. A common area for initial deterioration is on the sole tread pattern, which lowers gripping abilities. You might also find fraying in the upper seems after regular and intensive use.

If you exercise a minimum of twice per week, experts advise wearing a shoe specific to the type of training you’re taking part in. For example, running has a different effect on the foot than walking or resistance training. However, some shoes are versatile enough to accommodate a variety of workouts.
Your feet support your body weight, thus absorbing the majority of the impact from the movements you make. When you’re not wearing good training shoes, this impact can lead to discomfort or even injury.

- Type of activity: Ensure that you’re wearing the right shoes for the type of sport you’re taking part in. Walking requires a stiff heel, while you need a solid, flat shoe with reliable cushioning for strength training.
- Design: Factor in the level of cushioning, support and flexibility you’ll need. If you mainly perform indoor gym training, cushioning in the forefoot is essential. Conversely, running requires it in the heel, plus adequate ankle support.
- Know your gait mechanics: Neutral, supination (under pronate) or overpronate. These terms relate to how your foot lands on the ground during motion. Check the wear on your shoes to find out which group you fall into. Neutral (center), underpronate (outer) and overpronate (inner).
- Get your size right: Most forms of exercise will heat your feet, leading to swelling. Ensure you have enough room in the toe box. Opt for a half size bigger than usual.

This trainer makes use of memory foam in the midsole and molds to the shape and position of the user’s foot. If you perform high-intensity workouts such as cardio, this might be a good fit due to the comfort it offers.
The laces are composed of elastic bands, which makes it easier and quicker to slip in and out of the shoe. Handy for when you’re in a rush.
It’s around the same price range as the Metcon.

In terms of cost, the Gel-Craze TR4 is more expensive.

3. Adidas Alphabounce Beyond
The midsole is composed of BOUNCE material, which provides a boost in areas where your weight is applied. This makes it versatile, adapting to the pressure imposed by the movements.
I would suggest it’s a good option for people who perform sprints, cardio, resistance training, HIIT or cross-training.
The Alphabounce appears to withstand more wear and tear for a longer period of time than the Metcon. It also features a continental rubber sole, which provides sufficient traction, allowing you to use it on all surfaces.
When comparing price, the Beyond will set you back slightly more but is still affordable.

Nike Metcon Repper DSX Final Thoughts
No one likes an ill-fitting shoe during a workout, it can cause pain and injury. A good pair will allow you a more comfortable and safe training experience. I believe the Nike Metcon Repper DSX sports the features to accommodate this.
The mesh upper performs well for breathability and flexibility. The midsole makes it comfortable to wear, and the grooved design of the outer sole offers more flexibility and grip.
In my opinion, the Metcon Repper DSX is a good choice for cross-training, CrossFit, gym work and similar activities.
